Phenol and its chemical derivatives are key building blocks for polycarbonates, epoxies, bakelite, nylon, detergents, herbicides such as phenoxy herbicides, and numerous pharmaceutical drugs. 2-Piperidinone is also a useful synthetic intermediate, it is used to synthesize Cenicriviroc (C256550), an experimental drug candidate for the treatment of HIV infection.
